Dentists in Almaty Region Stole 66 Million Tenge by Falsifying Children’s Treatment

A scheme to embezzle funds from Kazakhstan's compulsory social health insurance (OSMS) system has been uncovered in the Almaty region. Nearly 66 million tenge was illegally withdrawn from the fund, tiek.kz/ reports, citing the regional prosecutor's office.

A Cynical Enrichment Scheme

According to the investigation, the scheme was organised by the director of two private dental clinics. Using patients’ personal data, he entered false information into the medical information system claiming that children had received expensive orthodontic services.

It is particularly noteworthy that some of the children whose data was used to register fictitious treatment were patients with congenital conditions.

Based on these fabricated reports, the Social Health Insurance Fund transferred money to the clinics’ accounts. The fraudulent actions caused the state damage amounting to 65,900,000 tenge.

Verdict and Compensation for the Damage

The illegal appropriation of funds was uncovered during a prosecutorial inspection, after which a criminal case was opened.

The collected materials were sent to the Konaev City Court, which found the clinic director guilty and issued a corresponding verdict. According to the supervisory authority, the material damage caused to the state has now been fully reimbursed.
