Record 677 Billion Tenge: Investment in Kazakhstan’s Water Sector Rises by 79%
Over the past two years, investment attracted for the development of Kazakhstan’s water sector has reached a record 677 billion tenge. The large-scale modernisation of water infrastructure is being carried out on the direct instructions of the Head of State, Tiek.kz reports.
What Will the Billions Be Spent On?
The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said that compared with 2022–2023, when 377.9 billion tenge was attracted, the volume of investment has increased by almost 300 billion tenge.
The main purpose of the investment is the large-scale renovation and construction of water infrastructure. The funds will be used for:
- construction of new reservoirs and reconstruction of existing ones;
- modernisation of canals and hydraulic structures;
- creation of new facilities for the safe storage and efficient distribution of water.
Ultimately, these measures are expected to improve the reliability of water supplies for the population and agricultural sector while significantly reducing water losses.
International Projects and New Technologies
Among the key initiatives being implemented with the attracted funds are:
- In cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank: construction of three major reservoirs in the Zhambyl, West Kazakhstan and Kyzylorda regions.
- With the support of the Asian Development Bank: construction of the Yesil counter-regulator in the Akmola region.
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurlan Nurtzhigitov emphasised that cooperation with international institutions provides Kazakhstan with more than just financial resources.
“Investment is being attracted to develop water infrastructure. At the same time, international cooperation is not limited to financial support. It also involves the introduction of modern technologies, digitalisation of the sector, strengthening human resources and scientific capacity, as well as the exchange of best practices,” the minister concluded.
