“Our Kyrgyz Neighbors Have Shown Us Up”: Journalist on Central Asia’s Largest Stadium
If the Kyrgyz built a 51,000-seat stadium for $60 million, Kazakhstan should have built at least a 30,000-seat stadium for $37 million. Where did the money go? Where is the field? Who is responsible?
They have really exposed us!
Central Asia’s largest stadium has been commissioned in Bishkek. I went there specifically to see the sports facility. Both its architecture and quality impressed me. It is excellently built. The budget is $60 million. Capacity is 51,000 people. Construction took three years.
At the same time, construction of the Kazhymukan Munaitpasov Stadium was underway in Astana. It was also recently commissioned. Its budget was $37 million, while its capacity is 3,600 seats.
Now compare the two. If the Kyrgyz built a 51,000-seat stadium for $60 million, Kazakhstan should have built at least a 30,000-seat stadium for $37 million. In fact, ours is ten times smaller.
How does that make sense? The numbers do not add up. The decision makes no logical sense. Where did the money go? Where is the field? Who is responsible?
In short, our Kyrgyz neighbors have made us feel the pain — and exposed us badly.
