SCO Summit in Bishkek: Indian PM Urges Putin to End the War

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war with Ukraine during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, tiek.kz/ reports.

Excerpts from the transcript of the conversation between Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin were published on the official Kremlin website. The Indian prime minister stressed the need for a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

“We do not need an endless continuation of the war, but its end… With every day that the war continues, humanity takes a step backward, and every step toward peace gives all of humanity genuine hope. We must move from endless war toward its end, toward the cessation of hostilities. This is very important for all humanity. We must resolve all issues peacefully; that is the demand of all humanity. This is also India’s appeal: India is the country of Gandhi, the country of Buddha, and this is our appeal,” Narendra Modi stressed.

In response, Vladimir Putin briefly said: “We are moving along this path.”

Context and Summit Participants

The war launched by Russia against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, continues to this day. According to available data, hundreds of thousands of people on both sides have been killed since then.

A major SCO summit is currently taking place in the Kyrgyz capital. The event is attended by the presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russia, Belarus and Iran, as well as the President of China and the prime ministers of India and Pakistan.

This year, Kyrgyzstan holds the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
